Bland Colonel
Theodorick Bland made history for commanding light cavalry troops during the Revolutionary War, but few may know that Bland practiced for many years as a doctor in Virginia. The descendent of Pocahontas was sent to the University of Edinburgh and graduated in 1763. He worked as a doctor until 1771, when poor health caused him to give up his practice. After his retirement, he decided to become a patriot, starting out as a captain for Virginia cavalry. On this date in 1777, Bland was made a cavalry colonel in the Continental Army. "Light Horse" Harry Lee blamed the defeat at the Battle of Brandywine on Bland, noting "Colonel Bland was noble, sensible, honorable, and amiable; but never intended for the department of military intelligence."
